DSRL is ridiculous

January 17, 2008

Maybe these spots appeal to kids. Maybe. Maybe somebody out there thinks they’re entertaining, or have any kind of value at all. I think they’re ridiculous. I think it’s a forced bad idea, from a poorly written brief. This is the worst Manning Endorsement I’ve seen, which is sad considering I like some his other spots, like the “Priceless Peptalks” spots. I saw this commercial last night during American Idol—yes, I enjoy public humiliation as much as the other 29,999,999 people that tuned in last night. That means Oreos was willing to spend close to $1 Million for a media buy. The microsite is pretty sharp too. Not good, but clean and has some cool graphics and what not. You can’t polish a turd though, the subject matter is awful.

So you have, a cool $1 mil media buy, 4 celebrity endorsements (counting the whole manning family), the amount it cost to produce the spot and microsite, that adds up to a lot of Oreos. It seems with a budget like that they might want to do something—I don’t know—smart and funny. This looks like a “client-driven” spot that some marketing specialist with no creative talent sketched on a napkin in a bar. I actually think this could’ve worked better without the celebrities, I was too distracted at the fact that they would do this commercial to care about oreos at all. Quit wasting your money, and trust your ad agency.Just someone please agree with me.These spots are awful. Shame on you Mannings. And put some pants on that Oreo, he’s freaking me out a little.

  1. I completely agree. I saw the ad for the first time last night and all I could think is that Manning has truly “sold out.” But hey, if I got paid millions of dollars to lick Oreo’s, I’d probably take the gig.

Love the blog, I enjoy reading it.

  2. I completely agree, CK, but American Idol? Really?

  3. Thanks Ginny, and Ricky.

I know, I know, I should be ashamed of myself for watching that show, but I’m actually doing a little research for a developing blog about American Idol media buys and exposure versus Super Bowl media buys and exposure. Could be good…hope to hear from both of you soon.

    Thanks for stopping by.
    CK
